Located on the West Coast of central Kyushu Island, Kumamoto Prefecture is Japan's noted southern belle which has been blessed with awesome natural Beauty.
Well over half the land (7,402km) is still untouched natural forests, rolling grasslands, high snow-capped mountains, and deep valleys. Framed to the west by the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas, the area is bordered by more than 120 islands in the Amakusa Sea.
The Prefecture thrives on rich agricultural and marine resources, and is historically significant as a bastion of Christianity during the 1500's. Its thriving capital, Kumamoto City, is known throughout the country for its youthful exuberance - some of which is due to its two outstanding universities. The Prefecture is home to two great national parks - the Aso-Kuju National Park and the Unzen-Amakusa National Park, and is the true heart and soul of Japan.
Kumamoto is the perfect sightseeing base for exploring Japan's southernmost island of Kyushu.
